Reading Time: 1 minute

An explosion at a cafe has killed Alexander Zakharchenko, the leader of the Russian-backed separatists in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, sources there say.

The report was carried by the rebel “Donetsk Republic” news agency, DNR. Russia’s Interfax and Tass news agencies are also reporting it.

There are few details so far.

The heavily-armed rebels in Donetsk and Luhansk regions refuse to recognise the Ukrainian government in Kiev.

According to ItarTass news agency we read that the Russian Federation Council’s Kosachyov, said that the killing is a terrorist attack which cannot have any justification.

This is a developing story
