Works on Gas Pipeline connecting Malta to Sicily expected to start in 2021

The Sicilian Region and the Government of Malta are held a meeting in relation to the construction of the submarine gas pipeline that will connect the two islands of the Mediterranean Sea.

A technical meeting to take stock of the project of common interest on which the European Union gave the go-ahead was held in the offices of the regional office of the Territory and the environment. Together with the Councilor Toto Cordaro, the representatives of the Maltese Ministry for Energy and Water, Henry De Battista, Manuel Sapiano and Alexandra Meli.

Wednesday’s meeting has served to reflect on common objectives in view of a shared goal: to put the communities in line with Europe. With this in mind, the construction of the gas pipeline that will go from Gela to Delimara, as well as the study of new projects that allow us to intercept community resources, creating development and employment fall within the scope “.

The start of works for the gas pipeline – 151 kilometers long and with a flow of 232 thousand cubic meters per hour – is scheduled for 2021.

During the meeting – which follows the meetings held in Malta and Catania by the President of the Region Nello Musumeci with representatives of the Maltese government – which was also attended by the heads of the departments of Energy, Cultural Heritage, Arpa and the Superintendency of the Sea, there were evaluation of the water surface and the maritime domain in which the infrastructure will fall back.

Sicilian media reports that the Maltese Ministry of the Environment is now awaiting authorizations for laying cables on adjacent private land.
