George Michael fans are in for a treat this Christmas season as Wham’s iconic song ‘Last Christmas’ is being re-released on vinyl to commemorate its 35th anniversary, reported Smooth radio.
It was previously reported that the entire team of George Michael was working pretty hard to try and get Last Christmas to number 1 on the charts this year, and it looks like this new vinyl record might just do the job.
“Last Christmas” was born one day in 1984 when George Michael and Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley were visiting Michael’s parents. While they were sitting around watching TV, Michael suddenly dashed upstairs to his childhood bedroom and composed the modern Xmas classic in about an hour. “George had performed musical alchemy, distilling the essence of Christmas into music,” Ridgeley said. “Adding a lyric which told the tale of betrayed love was a masterstroke and, as he did so often, he touched hearts.”
‘Last Christmas’ had to settle for number two back in 1984, as it was released the same year as Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’. It has re-entered the chart every year since downloads and streaming were included, reaching number two once again in 2017. The song reached No. 1 in Denmark, Slovenia and Sweden and No. 2 in eight countries; Belgium, Netherlands, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, New Zealand and United Kingdom. Wham! donated all of their royalties to the Ethiopian famine.
George Michael’s music currently features on the soundtrack to the romcom Last Christmasstarring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, loosely based on the Wham! classic.
