Politico: The Trump administration will withdraw the United States from the U.N. Human Rights Council, an entity it has long accused of being biased against Israel and giving cover to rights-abusing governments who gain membership.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced the decision Tuesday evening. The announcement came a day after the U.N.’s human rights chief, in a speech to the council, criticised President Donald Trump’s immigration policy decisions that have led his administration to separate families apprehended after entering the U.S. illegally.

US ambassador Nikki Haley said Tuesday, branding the global body a “cesspool of political bias.”

“We take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organisation that makes a mockery of human rights,” she said.

Haley said that if the council does reform, the United States “would be happy to rejoin.”
