Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola, who led the EPP negotiations on the Hungary issue, told Corporate Dispatch that today’s vote underlines what Europe stands for.

EU Parliament votes to trigger Article 7 sanctions procedure against Hungary

The EU stands for freedom, of compassion, of fierce personal liberty, of passionate equality, of rule of law, of free thought, free movement, free press, and of protection of minorities.

It is a global symbol of enduring courage.

This was an important vote and proved that when it comes to protecting the rule of law there is no partisan considerations. There can be no compromise on our values.

Earlier MEP Metsola was reported by CNN that in a private meeting with EPP members on Tuesday evening, Orban was defiant.

Prime Minister Orban was uncompromising,” said Metsola. “His reaction was an eye-opener for a number of MEPs who had previously remained silent in his regard. They stood up to say ‘no, we won’t tolerate you any more.”
