Thousands of protesters have gathered to march against the rising tide of right-wing politics. Protest organizers have warned that racism and discrimination “are becoming socially acceptable.”
Activist groups representing migrants, the LGBTQ+ community, workers and the homeless, joined the protests together with people of all ages and backgrounds.
“A dramatic political shift is taking place: racism and discrimination are becoming socially,” protest organizers Unteilbar said in a statement. “What yesterday was considered unthinkable and unutterable has today become a reality.”
The organizers pointed to growing xenophobia and increasing measures aimed at curbing irregular migration, saying: “Europe is in the grip of an atmosphere of nationalistic antagonism and exclusion.”
Up to 40,000 people were expected to join.
