The Independent Group of the group of breakaway British MPs, know as the The Independent Group, has applied to be a political party.

The group submitted an application to the Electoral Commission to establish Change UK – The Independent Group as a political party.

The move follows official advice that a new party wanting the chance to stand candidates in any upcoming poll should seek to register immediately.

The former Tory MP for South Cambridgeshire Heidi Allen has also been appointed to become interim leader of the new party.

It is planned a permanent leader will be elected at an inaugural conference in September, when the main launch of the new party will take place.
