Salah, Ronaldo and Modric final nominees for footballer of the year
FIFA has announced a shortlist of nominees for its seven annual awards. The Men’s Player of the Year is between Mo Salah (Liverpool and Egypt), Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus and Portugal), and Luka Modric (Real Madrid and Croatia).
An additional seven players had made a 10-player list announced in July: Lionel Messi (Barcelona and Argentina), Kylian Mbappe (PSG and France), Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City and Belgium), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid and France), Eden Hazard (Chelsea and Belgium), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur and England), and Raphael Varane (Real Madrid and France).
Since finishing second in voting in 2007, Lionel Messi has won the award five times and has been second five times.
Cristiano Ronaldo has a chance to win the award three times in a row. In all, he has won the FIFA Player of the Year Award five times, has finished second four times and third, once. He failed to make the final three in 2010.
Mo Salah and Luka Modric have never been shortlisted for the award before this year.
Salah was the top club scorer in Europe last year, scoring 44 goals for Liverpool and he is the current African Player of the Year. It has been nearly a quarter of a century since the last time an African player, George Weah, won the FIFA award in 1995.
Luka Modric won the UEFA Champions League player award last week beating out Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo. In July he was voted as the player of the tournament at the 2018 World Cup and won the Golden Ball.
