Several rockets have slammed into an Iraqi airbase north of Baghdad where US troops are based, officials and military sources said, adding that at least four Iraqi airmen were wounded.
Al Jazeera reports that a majority of US airmen stationed at the Balad airbase, 80km (50 miles) north of Baghdad, had already left.
The report refers to AFP news agency quoting military sources said on Sunday.
According to the report some shells hit the runway of the Balad airbase while another shell struck the gate, said Colonel Mohammed Khalil, a police officer in the northern Iraqi province of Saladin.
“Three Iraqi soldiers, who were on guard at the airbase gate, were injured as a result of the shelling,” he said.

Should the conflict heat up again, the potential for war between Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy, and Israel, a US ally, could further destabilise the region. Migration flows could deviate from the Eastern European corridor and opt for the central Mediterranean corridor instead.
