1930 – 1st transcontinental flight by a woman completed, Laura Ingalls.

1967 – Socialist revolutionary and guerilla leader Che Guevara, age 39, is killed by the Bolivian army.

2001 – For the first time in Afghanistan’s history, voters went to the polls to choose a president, selecting Hamid Karzai, who had served as the interim president after the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001. 

2012 Women’s rights and education activist Malala Yousafzai is shot three times by a Taliban gunman as she tried to board her school bus in Swat district of northwest Pakistan.

2014 – Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person diagnosed with a case of the Ebola Virus Disease in the U.S., dies at age 42 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.
