A security guard is dead and another man is fighting for his life after a drive-by shooting outside a popular Melbourne nightclub, police said on Sunday.
The shooting, which happened at about 3.20am, came amid a spate of gun violence in Australia’s second-largest city.
The man killed in the shooting outside a nightclub in inner Melbourne is understood to be security guard Aaron Khalid Osmani.
BBC reports “The incident at the Love Machine venue is not thought to be terror related.”
Australian newspaper The Age said investigators are likely to examine links to a motorcycle gang.
The Telegraph adds that four men – three security guards and a patron waiting to get in – were shot outside the Love Machine club in the trendy inner-city suburb of Prahran.
“It would appear that shots have been discharged from a car in this area into a crowd that was standing outside the nightclub,” Victoria Police Inspector Andrew Stamper told reporters.
Police confirmed a 37-year-old man from Narre Warren South suffered life-threatening injuries in the shooting and died in hospital.
A crowdfunding page set up for the family described Osmani as a “kind, funny and easygoing guy”.
A 28-year-old man remains in a critical condition in the Alfred Hospital.
A 50-year-old man and a 29-year-old man both sustained non-life threatening injuries.
