Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has called for an immediate cease-fire in Libya. The fractious North African nation has been in freefall since the overthrow of longtime strongman Moammar Gaddafi, and the Army chief’s recent attacks on the capital, Tripoli, have escalated the situation immensely, Euronews says.

The Libyan Observer reports that Conte emphasized the need for Haftar to withdraw his aggressive forces to their bases and the obligation of all parties to cease military operations and focus on the United Nations efforts to advance the political process.

This came during his meeting with Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Council (PC), Ahmed Maiteeq yesterday in Rome.
