Israeli forces have killed four Palestinians, including three teenagers, and shot more than 40 others at gatherings on the Gaza frontier marking the anniversary of the demonstration movement, the territory’s ministry of health said.
The Guardian reports that an attempt to limit the huge numbers of casualties at previous rallies, Egypt has sought to broker an agreement between Israel and Hamas, which governs Gaza and has backed the protests.
Middle East Eye reports that Gaza’s Health Ministry reported four deaths from gunfire: a 21-year-old man and three 17-year-old boys. However a repetition of previous protests, where as many as 60 people have been killed in one day, was averted. Adham Amara was shot in the face, Tamer Abu al-Kheir was shot in the chest and Bilal Mahmoud al-Najjar was also shot. They were all 17.
The Guardian said that Israel’s military estimated that 40,000 demonstrators had turned up at several points along the border, adding that they threw rocks and in some cases “explosive devices” towards the fence.
The Times of Israel reports that several rockets were fired from Gaza at Israel early Sunday, officials said, marking a likely setback hours after the sides appeared to be headed for an unofficial truce following a day of low-level violence along the border.
There were no reports of injuries or damage from the rocket fire, the Eshkol Regional Council said in a statement.
