Former Australia Prime Minister Bob Hawke has died
The former Australia Prime Minister died in his Sydney home on Thursday aged 89.
The former Labor leader, who was prime minister from 1983 to 1991. He remains the longest-serving prime minister of Australia’s Labor Party. He first won a seat in parliament in 1980 and became Labor leader in 1983.
His wife said in a statement that he died “peacefully at home”.
On Wednesday wrote an open letter to Australians backing Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to win Saturday’s poll in Australia.
Hawke was a charismatic politician and was known for his maverick style.
In 1990, as Australia’s Prime Minister, together with Malta’s Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami, he presided over the signing of the social security agreement between Australia and Malta by Australian Cabinet ministers Graham Richardson and Gerry Hand and Maltese Minister Louis Galea.
