Demand for electricity in Malta reaches highest levels recorded; causes disruption in service
Malta’s demand for electricity supply reached 510MW, which is the highest level ever recorded by Enemalta plc. This is an increase of slightly less than 5% when compared to the highest ever rate registered before, namely that of 488MW in August 2017. The demand for electricity supply was 15% higher than the demand registered in the same period during the past two years.
In the last two days, some customers of Enemalta, in various locations, experienced disruptions to their electricity supply due to the said increase in the demand that was a result of the far above average temperatures registered in the Malta, for this period. These interruptions, which were localised, were not related to each other.
In a statement, Enemalta said that over the years thanks to its investment programme to automate its substations, many of these interruptions were resolved in a relatively short time. In fact, supply was back to normal after ten minutes in 80% of cases.
