Kenya’s chief prosecutor has ordered the arrest of the finance minister over allegations of corruption related to the construction of two dams.
Henry Rotich is accused of flouting procurement procedures in awarding a contract worth over $450m for the dam projects to the Italian company CMC de Ravenna.
In March Rotich denied any wrongdoing in a large newspaper advert.
The company has also denied the accusations.
Kenyan sources said that from the details fo the case it indicates that Kenya paid 15 times over the fair rate to the Italian government-owned credit insurer for insuring the loans procured from a consortium of banks led by Intesa San Paolo connected to the construction of two dams.
Kenya’s chief prosecutor said senior government officials flouted procurement rules and committed illegalities in the Arror and Kimwarer dams scandal.
A total of 28 officials and entities are to be charged apart from Rotich.
