Sweden’s parliament has for the first time in modern history rejected a candidate for prime minister as political deadlock persists more than two months after inconclusive elections.

Ulf Kristersson, leader of the centre-right opposition, was voted down 195-154 on Wednesday, leading some observers to suggest the prospect of new elections was drawing nearer.
