i24 reports that Khadija Arafat, sister of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, 86, died Saturday morning while being treated in a Cairo hospital, according to Palestinian WAFA news agency.

Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas reportedly mourned her passing and acknowledged her role in her brother’s revolutionary and nationalistic aspirations realized through the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).

The Palestinian Embassy in Cairo announced that Arafat died while receiving treatment in a Cairo hospital, but no further information was given regarding her death.

She was reportedly buried at the Red Crescent cemetery in Cairo on Saturday.

After her brother died under what were perceived as suspicious conditions after a 2012 Al Jazeera investigated alleged the PLO leader might have been poisoned, Khadija made a statement to Ma’an News Agency asking concerned parties not to dig up her brother’s grave.

“Would exhuming is body bring him back to life?” she asked, rhetorically. “Let him be comfortable where he’s lying… To satisfy my conscious and my brother in his grave, let’s not talk about exhuming his body.”

Arafat rose to become the leader of the Palestinian movement after the creation of Israel, leading an armed struggle against it in which thousands died.
