50 persons were saved as they were trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach reach the European coast.

According to Alarm Phone, the group was saved by the commercial vessel ‘Asso 25’ and is now heading  towards the Sicilian port of Pozzallo, sources said on Friday.
Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who has spearheaded the government’s tough stance of closing Italian ports to NGO-run migrant-rescue ships, has been informed about the situation and has not raised objections. Earlier reports had indicated that the ship was is heading to Lampedusa.

Alarm Phone is alleging that the vessel with the group of migrants on board had issued a call for help but this was ignored by the Maltese authorities.
