Sky News: German foreign minister Heiko Maas said Mr Trump’s attacks against Germany during this week’s NATO talks endangered the West’s security.

“Europe can’t accept that what’s been built up over many years is intentionally damaged for the thrill of being provocative,” he told Der Spiegel.

In response to Mr Trump claiming a new natural gas pipeline to Russia from Germany has left Berlin “captive” to Moscow.

He said: “We aren’t prisoners, neither to Russia nor to the US.”

And his predecessor, Sigmar Gabriel, told the magazine: “Trump endangers world peace by consciously splitting the Western alliance and disregarding its values.”
