Bardonecchia – Italy summoned French ambassador over incident at border migrant clinic which has irked the Italian authorities in an incident which has proved to be an opportunity to be seized by the populist politicians who made games in last month’s election.
The incident saw five armed French customs officers entering an Italian clinic for migrants at a railway station over the border in Italy, and making demands. The incident has provoked widespread anger and France has been asked to explain why on Friday evening, five officers forced one individual to undergo a urine test at the premises west of the city of Turin.
Political figures in Italy, which has received over 600,000 migrants in the last four years, condemned the move.
France said that its team of French customs officers, who were on board a train travelling into Italy and who suspected a Nigerian train passenger with Italian residency was carrying drugs, has asked for permission. It added that the officials waited for the passenger to alight from the train and were allowed to use the station at Bardonecchia to obtain a urine sample under a bi-national agreement, it added, insisting that the officers had followed procedure. The test results came back negative.
